Details of Achievements

Established in 1944 by Shri U.A. Basrurkar, a freedom fighter and automobile engineer and his wife Smt. Anusuya Basrurkar to offer sightless children a programme of education and vocational training. With a modest beginning in 1945 with 3 students receiving education and care at the Industrial Home and School for the Blind in a rented premises located in the rural Lal Kuan, Badarpur area on the outskirt of Delhi, the Association is today a leading institution providing direct care to nearly 300 blind children and adults receiving education and a wide range of vocational training in its campus located in New Delhi. Over the seven decades of its existence, the Association has taken pioneering initiatives in the field of education, sports, teacher training, vocational training and rehabilitation of the visually challenged. The Association received the Best Institution National Award for empowerment of persons with disabilities in 2012. Following is an overview of the Associations different services: EDUCATION: 1. J.P.M. Sr. Sec. School for the Blind (Estd 1967) is a leading government-aided residential school affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education with over 200 children studying from Nursery to Class XII. 2. Unit for Children with Multiple Disabilities attached to JPM School takes care of special needs of VI children with mild mental retardation. 3. Training Centre for Teachers of the Visually Handicapped (1967-2007) 4. Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education (Visual Impairment) (estd.2005) affiliated to Delhi University offers B.Ed. Special Education (V.I.) 2-year programme. Total enrolment 55 teacher trainees 5. Computer Training Centre: Offers RCI approved 1-year Diploma in Computer Education (V.I.) since 2014 to prepare computer instructors for the blind - 25 trainees VOCATIONAL TRAINING: 1. General Mechanic cum Machine Operators Training Course This 1-year programme (Estd 1994) is recognized by Board of Technical Education, Delhi admits 20 trainees 2. Multi-skill Training Programme -20 trainees: 1-year programme for adult blind with marginally educated. Skills taught are: 1. book binding and paper craft; 2. basic massage; 3. chair caning; 4. candle making; 5. Packaging 6. Sewing and 7. Soap-making and cottage industries product. 3. Relaxation Massage Training (Estd 2003) - 10 trainees 4. Computer Training (Estd 1996) - 20 trainees 5. On The Job Call Centre Training (Estd 2008) - 10 trainees SERVICES: 1. Recording Studio to prepare audio recorded books and study material for the blind 2. Braille Production Unit 3. Placement Cell to provides job counseling and placement services to pass-out trainees, students 4. Orientation and Mobility and counseling for the newly blind 5. Hostel for Students and Trainees (300 inmates) 6. Health & Dental Care Unit 7. Library - JPM School and Durgabai Deshmukh College OTHERS: 1. Promotion of Sports for the blind – Establishment and support to Indian Blind Sports Association (Estd 1986). Co-hosted 20 National Sports Meets for the Blind since 1982.
