Technology solutions for the poor – TARA Makes it Possible For over twenty years, the TARA Group of Companies has been transforming the landscape of rural India by creating new opportunities to build village economies. TARA is a social enterprise which pioneers business approaches by which local entrepreneurs can help improve rural lives. The risks are few but the rewards are manifold. The mission of – Technology and Action for Rural Advancement is to create sustainable livelihoods on a large scale. It aims to give the rural entrepreneur an edge by designing and delivering machines and solutions that are suited to local needs and at the same time, easy to use and profitable. TARA helps local entrepreneurs produce and sell much needed goods and services. Alongside, it creates jobs and incomes to pay for these. TARA utilizes local skills and resources and its products are designed to help satisfy their day to day needs. From launching a start up to revolutionizing an existing production system, TARA provides customized technologies tailor made for local application to create jobs and opportunities, particularly for women and the marginalized. Pioneering Technologies for Sustainable Development The technology solutions include: • TARA Micro Concrete Roofing Tile Technology • TARA BALRAM Compressed Earth Block Technology • TARA Concrete Block Technology • TARA Fly Ash Technology • TARA Eco-Kiln • TARA Handlooms • TARA Handmade Paper and Paper Recycling Technology • TARA Briqueetters TARA technology solutions add value to the local resources TARA technology solutions add value to the local resources by transforming them into products that are used by rural house owners and communities. TARA MCR technology provides cost effective aesthetic and durable roofing, TARA Fly Ash technology produces high quality blocks and TARA Eco Kilns produce fired clay bricks. All TARA technologies are profitable and financially viable; with support coming from government programmes. TARA provides training for its products and technologies TARA provides training for its products and technologies to sustain business and enterprise development in rural areas. The training provided by TARA helps the rural poor earn a livelihood in their area with value addition to local resources. TARA also provides training to micro enterprises and commercial entrepreneurs for business operations, production and marketing. The TARA brand is the benchmark for customized services for small scale entrepreneurs. TARA supplies hardware and machinery for all its businesses. National Footprint During the year TARA has identified a niche with corporate houses in CSR initiatives. A major breakthrough has been achieved with the Ministry of Defence, State Thermal power plants and companies involved in power generation. Balram has been the flagship followed by Paper Recycling unit in this category. TARA has now started getting big orders from institutions like BALCO for Fly Ash machines for development of the neighbourhood tribal society using waste generated by thermal power plants. The same strategy is being explored with corporate houses in the states of Chattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand. Channel partners are actively working in most of the states promoting TARA technologies.
